Faculty Generated CD-Rom Programs Enhance Courses, Susan MilettaMike Rabaut and Bob Schatzow developed a CD-Rom program that allows instructors to create CDs containing course materials specific to their preferences and available on-site materials, as opposed to using textbook company generated programs. This program can be used for many academic areas including science, art, and music. I used the program to produce a disc containing micrographs of our slides for BSCL-1011. Each micrograph includes captions, descriptions, and specific structures identified by captioned image maps. In addition to the micrographs for laboratory review, the CD contains sample lab quizzes and answer keys for each of the semesters' twelve laboratory sessions. The quizzes are automatically graded and indicate correct answers. This enables students to practice with their lab materials and then check their progress. Video segments (with audio) are being added this term and will model some lab procedures for slide preparation, microbiology plate preparation, Gram staining, and various dissections. When the CD is completed it will also include website links to related class materials. The BSCL-1011 CD-Rom is being field tested this semester. Final revisions will be made this summer and the CD will then be sold (at cost) in the Ybor Campus Bookstore. We are currently working on a first draft of another CD. The new one will include micrographs and video segments of laboratory materials and procedures for BSCL-1085 and BSCL-1086. This CD should be available for field-testing in the Spring 2004. Students often require more time to learn lab materials than is allotted for each lab session. Many of our students are working parents and have difficulty scheduling additional lab review time on campus and therefore struggle with their lab work. It is our hope that this CD program will provide our students with the opportunity for reviewing their laboratory materials at home and thereby ensure greater student success in the laboratory classes. Dr. Susan Miletta is a Biology Professor at the Ybor Campus. Mike Rabaut and Bob Schatzow are Computer Science Professors at the Ybor Campus. |
