Academic Systems . . . Diorah Nelson

Academic Systems was designed by English and math instructors to be used primarily with prep classes. However, I have used it successfully with 1101. Each step of the writing process has a dedicated module with a coach, student samples, and peer collaboration for revision. These modules--Explore, Focus, Draft, Revision, Edit, Conclude-explain the writing process, step-by-step, and explain what the writer does at each step. For some students, these modules are the first practical experience they have had with the writing process and they find that writing can be fun and rewarding. Everything in the class is online which has several benefits. The most obvious is that the students' work cannot be lost and the dog can't eat it. A down side, from a student perspective, can be that if the work was never done, that is also clear because all work is dated and the dates can't be tampered with. Perhaps the handiest feature of the program is the interaction between the students and me. We communicate in two ways: one through messaging and the other through my responses to their writing. Once ground rules are established and the students know what is expected, peers respond to each other's papers and evaluate their own essays. These exercises provide students experience in reading and critiquing writing. The program provides a Grammar Book and Language Guide with directions and exercises for prewriting strategies, recognizing fact from opinion, using MLA and APA documentation, selecting and developing support, and writing topic and thesis statements, intros and conclusions.

Dr. Diorah Nelson, Assistant Professor of English, Plant City Campus Expertise: Rhetoric and Composition focused on ways that computers impact collaboration. Interested in pursuing that topic to involve students in their own learning and to engage them in more innovative and iinteresting learning activities.
